Midland Football League Premier Division: St Andrews 4 Heanor Town 3.

St Andrews Ground. Canal St, Leicester LE2 8LA

Despite its Scottish name, St Andrews FC and their Canal Street ground are the second closest ground to our house (LCFC’s King Power Stadium being 0.2 miles closer). I’ve been down to watch them a couple of times, including in 2014 when nearly 2000 packed in to watch the FA Vase semi-final against West Auckland, but it was a first visit for Frankie. A more modest 126 were in attendance this time but those of us who braved the freezing cold were rewarded with a cracker of a match.

The match kept swinging with both sides being in the lead at different points before Andrews finally nabbed it with a 90th minute free-kick that curled beautifully into the net. A sending-off each, both for violent conduct, added more spice to an already bruising match.

Frankie spent the second half in the main stand (40 seats) with the Heanor ‘Ultras’ (a dozen middle-aged folks with a flag) and had an ace time learning their songs and why their number 9 is called ‘Cabbage’ (He’s thick apparently…nice and PC in Heanor). They also had Poldark at the back, Rodney Trotter on the wing and someone called Carrots in midfield. Epic bantz.
