Leicestershire Senior League Championship Division: Ibstock United 3 Hathern 2.
The Welfare Ground, Leicester Rd, Ibstock LE67 6HN
Ibstock United rose from the ashes when the original club merged with Ellistown and cleared-off a few miles up the road. The ground has seen better days but was clearly well-loved in the past and the current bunch of volunteers do a great job keeping it up-to-scratch and maintaining a team in the village. There’s a lovely old turnstyle with the original Ibstock Welfare name carved into the stonework but it was locked and unused.
From the covered terrace, the strange sight of hills(!) can be seen in the distance. Hills! In Leicestershire!! It was a gorgeous evening at KO but bleeding freezing by HT and the wind was a contender for MOTM.
The game was decent with the last half-hour particularly hard-fought and exciting. Ibstock were the better side against top of the table Hathern and could have won by a few more. Ibstock’s number 14 was the best player on view, contrasting sharply with the carthorses at the back for Hathern. Hathern will probably go up though, probably replacing the senior side of Frankie’s club; Allexton & New Parks FC who are rock-bottom of the league above. Que sera sera.
