Northern Premier League Premier Division: Gainsborough Trinity 2 Matlock Town 1.
The Martin & Co. Arena, Northolme, Gainsborough DN21 2QW
We found ourselves in North Lincolnshire for a new year holiday and a visit to Gainsborough won-out over paying 40-odd quid to go and watch Grimsby v Salford or a visit to Cleethorpes Town’s awful looking new-build ground.
Gainsborough’s ground greeted us soon as we entered the town and it is an absolute beauty and deserves a far better name than the one it’s currently lumbered with of The Martin & Co Arena. The first half was terrible apart from a decent steak pie with more than decent gravy and mushy peas. Gainsborough’s first half goal-scorer clearly enjoys the delicacy quite often and he suited his nickname of ‘Fatty’ that the home terrace lovingly serenaded him with. I don’t know if he’d had an argument with the kitman but surely Gainsborough could find him a bigger kit for his ample frame/arse.
Matlock pulled one back with 5 minutes to go and I felt quite pleased for the couple from Matlock we’d chatted to pre-match but then Gainsborough won it 2 minutes later and fair-play to the home fans, they bounced about like they’d won the league.
